Challenges Facing Weymouth Today

Union Point

Bicknell Square and the Route 3A Corridor

Jackson Square Development

The development of the former Naval Air Station, South Weymouth is one of the biggest development projects in Massachusetts. With over 115 acres over three towns, it is a project that will be years in development and will eventually have 6000 residences and a host of commercial entities. Among the infrastructure challenges are water supply and waste removal, public safety (police and fire), and the maintenance of the miles of roads that will be created. This will all require a forward-thinking town government. I am leading those efforts!

Jackson Square Development

With the MBTA Commuter rail station within a short walk, Jackson Square has become a very popular place. Lovell Field's soccer fields are increasingly busy, area businesses and restaurants are bustling, the Herring Run is being revitalized, and the surrounding neighborhoods are easily walkable.

Over the next several years this square will transform into one of Weymouth's crown jewels.

Bicknell Square and the Route 3A Corridor

Not too long ago Bicknell Square was a thriving business center with a neighborhood drug store, a hardware store, and lots of mom & pop shops. It can be that neighborhood business center again. Weymouth is just completing a study of the Route 3A corridor from Fore River to the Hingham bridge over Back River. Abigail Adams Park leads into Great Esker Park with lots of walking trails. There are several blighted properties along the corridor and the square itself is sorely underutilized. What would you like to see there? How would you like to see Bicknell Square rise to take its rightful place among Weymouth's four villages?

Accessory Dwelling Units

Accessory Dwelling Units

Accessory Dwelling Units

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU's) are now legal in Massachusetts. This means that owners of homes in single-family neighborhoods can add apartments and even additional dwellings on their properties by right. There are some restrictions, but individual cities and towns (Weymouth among them) have limited control over how ADU's can transform neighborhoods.

What are your thoughts about single-family neighborhoods and the effect these units will have on them?

Parking in General

Parking seems to always be an issue everywhere. Weymouth currently has several municipal parking lots. Columbian Square has public parking, as does Jackson Square and Weymouth Landing. Many business districts also have on-street parking available, but it never seems to be enough. And we must come up with appropriate public parking around Bicknell Square.

Any ideas? I'd love to hear from you.
